8/25/2025 Letter from Cambria Fire Department

Dear Cambria Residents,

The Cambria Community Services District Fire Department would like to thank everyone who participated in our recent neighborhood meetings. We were encouraged by the excellent turnout and enthusiasm for strengthening community preparedness. Your involvement is essential to making Cambria safer and better prepared for emergencies.

We are currently recruiting additional Neighborhood Liaisons to help strengthen communication and coordination across our community. Liaisons serve as vital points of contact between residents and the Fire Department, helping to share critical information before, during, and after an emergency.

As a Neighborhood Liaison, you will play an important role in building preparedness in three key areas:

1. Communication with Your Neighbors

  • Share important updates and seasonal safety reminders (such as preparing a household “go bag”).
  • Encourage neighbors to sign up for official emergency alert systems (Reverse 911, Wireless Emergency Alerts, Prepareslo.org).
  • Make sure neighbors know who you are and how to reach you.
  • Promote connection by encouraging neighbors to share needs and resources.

2. Evacuation Planning

  • Work with 3–5 nearby households to form a small evacuation group.
  • Encourage written evacuation plans and practice routes.
  • Help coordinate carpooling to reduce congestion.
  • Ensure vulnerable neighbors are included in the plan.
  • Encourage everyone to identify a safe destination outside the immediate threat zone.

3. Defensible Space Inspections

  • Remind neighbors to schedule inspections before peak fire season.
  • Emphasize how defensible space helps protect individual homes and the entire community.

Neighborhood Liaisons are also encouraged to host informal meet-ups — such as driveway chats, coffee gatherings, or small group discussions — to build trust and strengthen connections. When scheduling allows, Fire Department staff will gladly attend to provide support and answer questions.

We are especially seeking liaisons for the following neighborhoods:

  • Park Hill
  • Happy Hill
  • Leimert
  • Santa Rosa Creek Area
  • Mobile Home Parks
  • Main Street
  • East Lodge Hill

We also need Spanish-speaking liaisons to ensure all residents receive important updates and resources.

Upcoming Meetings
We will be holding additional neighborhood meetings in the coming weeks to recruit and train liaisons. If you cannot attend the meeting scheduled for your neighborhood, you are welcome to join any session — all will cover the same key information.

To accommodate different schedules, we will be offering meetings at varied times of day, and we are exploring a Zoom option to make participation more convenient.

Your participation as a Neighborhood Liaison is a direct investment in Cambria’s safety and resilience. If you are interested in becoming a liaison or learning more about the program, please contact mburkey@cambriacsd.org.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to keeping Cambria safe.

Sincerely,
Michael Burkey
