SUSPECTED SHARK ENCOUNTER — CAMBRIA

Cambria Fire Department warns of a suspected shark encounter on Oct 26, 2026, offshore from Leffingwell Landing; no injuries reported.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on October 26, a local kayak fisherman reported that something struck the underside of his kayak approximately one mile offshore from Leffingwell Landing. The impact capsized the kayak and knocked him into the water.

The fisherman climbed back aboard and began paddling toward shore, but punctures in the hull caused the kayak to take on water, forcing him to swim to shore. Fortunately, he reported no injuries.

Cambria Fire was dispatched to the scene after the fisherman reached shore. Personnel contacted him and launched Boat 57, recovering his kayak, fishing gear, and personal belongings.

Dr. Chris Lowe from the California State University Long Beach (CSULB) Shark Lab reviewed photographs of the damage to the kayak and advised that it was reasonable to assume the kayak had been struck by a shark. He recommended posting warnings as a precaution. Shark involvement remains suspected.

Ocean users are encouraged to exercise additional caution in the area, remain aware of their surroundings, and avoid entering the water near visible shark activity. Call 911 to report an immediate threat or emergency.
