Labor Day Weekend Safety Briefing
Dear Cambrians,
As we approach Labor Day weekend, I want to take a moment to recognize what this holiday means to our community. Labor Day is more than just the end of summer; it is a time to honor the hard work and dedication of the men and women who keep our communities, families, and economy strong. It is also a cherished opportunity for residents and visitors alike to gather, enjoy the coast, share meals, and celebrate together in Cambria.
With more people in town, more traffic on our roads, and more gatherings in our neighborhoods, the role of the Cambria Fire Department becomes especially important. Our firefighters and emergency personnel will be on duty around the clock, prepared to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and rescues both inland and along our shoreline. While we stand ready, we also rely on the cooperation of our community to help prevent emergencies before they occur. By taking simple steps to stay safe, each of us contributes to keeping this holiday one of celebration rather than crisis.
This briefing outlines key safety reminders that will help protect you, your loved ones, and your neighbors throughout the holiday weekend.
Neighbors and visitors: Thanks for helping keep Cambria safe during a busy holiday weekend.
Here’s what I need from you:
Wildfire Readiness
- No fireworks. They’re not allowed here—period.
- Outdoor equipment: Avoid mowing, grinding, or using gas-powered tools after 10 a.m. on dry, windy days. Keep a hose/extinguisher nearby.
- Vehicles: Never park on dry grass; hot exhaust can ignite vegetation.
- Defensible space: Clear needles/leaves from roofs/gutters. Move flammables (wood piles, propane, furniture) 5+ feet from structures.
Grilling & Outdoor Cooking
- Stable surface, 10 feet from anything that can burn.
- Keep a bucket of water, hose, or extinguisher within reach.
- Cool ashes 48 hours in a metal container—never plastic or cardboard.
Beach & Campfire Notes
- Follow posted State Parks/County rules. If fires are restricted, don’t start one.
- Wind can throw embers far—when in doubt, skip the fire.
Heat, Health & Holiday Crowds
- Hydrate early and often; check on older neighbors.
- Beat the heat: Seek shade/AC, take breaks, know heat illness signs (headache, dizziness, nausea).
- Expect congestion. Drive slowly, watch for cyclists/pedestrians, and never block fire lanes or hydrants.
Home & Rental Safety
- Test smoke/CO alarms.
- Know two ways out of every room; keep hallways/stairs clear.
- If you host guests, show them the address, exits, and how to call 911.
Coastal & Water Safety
- Sneaker waves and rip currents happen fast. Stay off wet/black rocks, keep kids within arm’s reach, and heed posted advisories.
- Alcohol + water don’t mix.
Pets & Kids
- Hot cars become lethal in minutes—never leave anyone in a parked vehicle.
- Keep pets leashed; loud noises and crowds can cause them to bolt.
If You See Smoke or Unsafe Activity
- Call 911 immediately. Early reports save lives.
- For non-emergency questions, contact local public safety after the incident clears.
Stay Informed
- Sign up for county emergency alerts at ReadySLO.org and review ReadyForWildfire.org for preparedness tips.
- Keep your phone charged; enable Wireless Emergency Alerts.
Together, we can enjoy a safe, calm holiday. Thank you for doing your part.
Sincerely,
Michael Burkey
